Project

Espai Cel

Spain

The goal was creating a new space in the historical Balneario Termes Victoria in Caldes de Montbui. The firm in charge of the project (Arquetipus - projectes arquitectònics) wanted to get deep into these facilities, more than 250 years old and formerly used as thermal water and cooled thermal water reservoirs, mainly for healing and well-being purposes.

As these facilities were semi-underground and had the function and features corresponding to reservoirs, their spaces were always left as residual and kept out of the sight of visitors. Discovering them was crucial. They understood that this was a captivating place to show, perfect to create a unique space to be enjoyed with all senses.

Different pools were placed inside the space corresponding to the former reservoirs, and also in the traditional bath gallery. Each one of them has something characteristic which makes it different to the other ones, but all of them have been made with the purpose of finding relax and using the mineral medicinal properties of these millenary thermal waters.

During this intervention, the goal was conveying as much neutrality as possible; thus, the decision to keep the remnants of the different phases this space has gone through. In several areas, the original stone walls and ceramic vaults were reconnected. In some others, the phase where the walls were covered was preserved. Time left water marks on them, and they were kept visible because they show the nature of this place clearly. On the last step of intervention, some constructive elements and contemporary materials were applied, such as PDLC from i-ON by Pujol.

PDLC has been chosen as the solution for one of the most exclusive rooms in the building, which is meant to help the visitor relax privately. PDLC from i-ON by Pujol makes it possible to get instantly the best glass transparency or the maximum level of intimacy in its interior. Its excellent humidity resistance makes it the ideal product for this project. PDLC from i-ON adapts easily to any kind of remote-control system:  automation, smartphone, tablet or movement sensor.

The result clearly shows all the intensity and care put in the working process and the details. This space entices us to see it, and most importantly, to live it and enjoy it.
